As
a family, we enjoy an active holiday with camping
and adventure thrown in so this time Namibia was
our choice. It is a very safe country to travel
with very good roads and camping facilities. A flight
from Heathrow took us to Windhoek (via Frankfurt)
where our trusty Land Rover 110 was promptly proclaimed
our home for the next 3 and a half weeks. The vehicle
was supplied by our tour organisers ‘Safari
Drive’ and came completely kitted out
with everything required for a long trip. We were
very impressed with their attention to detail and
the range of equipment supplied.
A
trip south took us to the Series canyon and the
sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Dessert.
The world’s oldest desert with sand dunes
reported to be over 300m high.
It
was then up the coast to Swakopmund for a bit
of quad biking and kayaking with the seals. After
all this is suppose to be a family holiday!
Driving
through the dramatic scenery through the Naukluft
Park was fascinating and onto the beautiful Brandberg
Mountains where we camped at the remote and secluded
Ugab camp site among the Acacia trees contrasting
against the towering russet tones of the mountains.
It
was then onto Damaraland, for the rock engravings
and paintings at Twfelfontein and then north driving
through the dust of the dry river beds from Poros
to Ocopembe and there onto Opuwo, where we encounter
Desert Elephant and Giraffe before making friends
with the local Himba tribes
After
several nights camping it was time for luxury at
Hobatere Lodge (Click
here) with impeccable service and friendly staff
. Here the swimming pool over looked the water hole,
and both day and night game drives allowed us to
encounter many different species of both birds and
mammals.
Game
viewing was the agenda for the next few days in
Etosha National Park with the wide open spaces
and the abundant wildlife makes a visit to the
park unforgettable.
Spring Bok, Oryx, Iland, Antelope, Zebra, Elephant,
Rhinoceros, Giraffe, Hyena, Jackel, Steinbok,
Kudu and many more.
It
was then down to Waterburg Plateau. This vast wilderness
area with distinctive red sandstone cliffs is home
to a wide variety of bird life and antelope.
Before
our final night in the civilization of Winhoek,
we had to experience the Hot Springs at Gross
Barman Resort. These were indoor hot spring baths,
with a temperature of 37C and an outdoor pool
a rather chilly 27C.
Back
to the hussle and bussle of city life in Windhoek
and a 14hr flight back to good old Blighty.
A
fantastic Family holiday with a difference !
