Sahara and the Deep South Christmas
2003 / New Year 2004

Family Self – Drive Holiday with a little something extra.

Safari Drive

Fitting 2 adults and 3 children into a Discovery was about the hardest thing we had to do on this holiday.

rcv

A gentle drive through France brought us to the port of Marseille, and the beginning of our adventure.

24 hours on a ferry and we had arrived at Tunis. Driving in a convoy of 5 vehicles to Port El Kanntaoui where we checked into the 5* Hotel El Hannah Palace, which really was like a Palace!

The next day took us South to the colosseum of El Jem Where Gladiators faced their fate,(picture) followed by a visit to the soukes in Sfax.
It was the cave dwellings and the fortified villages in the Dahar Mountains where we had lunch, followed by an evening in luxury at the hotel El Sangho.

A 2 hour drive across piste to the old Berber village of Guermessa in the mountains where we visited a filming location from Star Wars in the small village of Ksar Hadada near Beni Khedache.

rcv We then travelled across a spectacular mountain pass to Toujane where we spend a very windy Christmas Eve under the palm trees.
Christmas morning and after the usual “ silliness” we travelled to Matmata and the under-ground dwellings of the troglodytes.
We got our first real feeling of the desert tonight, as we camp at Kebili on the edge of the Sahara.

An evening of entertainment Beduin style followed by a very cold night!

The next 6 nights we were on our own, guided by the natives of the Sahara. Baking us “ bread “ every morning, and feeding us every night. In between we drove the 50meter high sand dunes!!

Spectacular days of off-roading across the dunes, magnificent scenery and the amazing night sky with its constellations so clear, made this a holiday to remember. Encountering the Sahara Festival in Douz, with camel racing and a party atmosphere amongst the locals made this a very impressional New Year.

It was back to the 5* luxury in the way of a converted prison La Kasbah. Where the sand and dust could be washed from our ears and we could get use to civilization once again, before that LONG journey home.

It is thanks to Sahara Travel that we were able to encounter these experiences and have such fantastic memories that will remain with both us and the children for a very long time.
