MOT ‘holiday’ is over

Attention car owners, is your car MOT certified and safe to drive?

The UK government has deemed MOT and servicing centres essential services. Road safety is not something to be compromised on, it is time to book your MOT test and service your car.

Information from the DVLA revealed that in April and May of 2020 MOT testing dropped by an incredible 79% and 61%. These rates were due to the 6-month MOT exemption granted to motorists during the COVID-19 lockdown.

It is important to have a car that is legally allowed to drive on the roads of the UK even if you are not planning on driving anywhere, emergencies can and do happen, so it is better to be safe than sorry!

What is a MOT exactly?

An MOT test makes sure that your car is roadworthy and legal to be driving on UK roads. If your car passes the test, then you will receive a MOT certificate valid for 12 months.

Parts of the car that are checked in the MOT test include:

  • Brakes
  • Tyres
  • Mirrors
  • Steering & Suspension
  • Seatbelts
  • Exhaust emissions
  • Windscreen

If I have a MOT certificate, then do I still need to service my car?

It is crucial to get your car serviced, a MOT certificate mainly checks the safety and legal standards of the car to make sure all road users are safe. Servicing your car means a professional mechanic checks the mechanical workings within the vehicle so ensure your car is running efficiently, comfortably, and safely.

Jaguars should be serviced every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or once a year. It is important for this car to have regular services to keep it safe, reliable and increase its longevity and health. Book you Jaguar in for a service at the same time as your mandatory MOT test to hit two birds with one stone.

Land Rovers are another popular vehicle that must be regularly maintained with a service. Visit our local Land Rover approved service centre as we will meet the rigorous quality standards that ensure the safety, wellbeing and warranty are completely protected.

How much does the MOT test cost?

All test centres around the UK have a set price of £54.85 for cars and £29.65 for standard motorbikes. This price is set by the government and MOT test centres cannot charge more.

If your vehicle is brand new, you will only need to get them MOT tested when they are three years old and then annually after that.

The ONLY acceptable reasons for driving your car without a valid MOT certificate is if:

You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving illegally without a MOT certificate. If your car is found to be dangerous and unroadworthy by an MOT test and you continue you drive your vehicle without a certificate you could be fined up to £2,500, issued with 3 penalty points, and be banned from driving.
