Range Rover Evoque Gearbox Faults: Causes & Fixes

The Range Rover Evoque has found itself sitting among a list of the most desirable Range Rover models on the market. Despite concerns over reliability, its array of tech and touch of elegance ensure it remains desirable to many.

However, owners of both the automatic and manual models have raised concerns over problems they encounter with the gearbox. From delayed shifting to grinding noises, users are encountering issues and needing frequent help from their local Range Rover specialist to rectify problems.

We’ve listed some of the most common issues Evoque owners discover with their gears in both the manual and automatic versions of the sophisticated SUV.

What gearbox does the Range Rover Evoque use?

The Range Rover Evoque is available in both automatic and manual transmission. The automatic models are equipped with a ZF Friedrichshafen AG 9HP 9-speed automatic transmission. You’ll often see it referred to as the ZF 9HP48. Manual Range Rover Evoque models use a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Both are complex pieces of hardware and require professional maintenance to ensure they perform at their best.

Most common Range Rover Evoque gearbox problems

We’ve highlighted some of the most common gearbox issues Evoque owners encounter and listed the issues that may lead to the faults developing.

Jerky and harsh gear changes

When pulling away, in slow traffic or moving from gear to gear, you may feel a noticeable jolt or thud. It might even feel like someone has bumped your Evoque from behind. A dull clunking sound or knocking noise as the gears shift may also be noticeable.

This problem can be caused by software issues, contaminated transmission fluid or valve wear. If you notice that this issue happens often, you should speak to your local Range Rover specialist. Early intervention avoids a full rebuild, and they can be extremely expensive.

Delayed gear engagement

If you struggle to engage reverse or even put your vehicle into drive, the gearbox may be struggling. It’s most likely that you’ll notice this when you first start the vehicle or when you switch from park to drive. At first, nothing will happen, then once your Evoque finally engages gear, you’ll feel a sudden bump. Other signs that you have an issue with the vehicle engaging gear include a delay between selecting drive and accelerating, and the Evoque hesitating to get into reverse.

Often caused by a drop in hydraulic pressure, a worn clutch or damage to the torque converter. This is like other gearbox issues, where, left untreated, the whole transmission can fail.

Gear slipping under acceleration

When you attempt to pull away, overtake or drive uphill, you may notice that your Range Rover Evoque emits a whining noise or a sound that seems like the engine is straining. This is possibly because the gears are slipping under acceleration. You’ll see the revs rise, but the speed stays the same.

This is normally due to issues with the torque converter or worn clutch packs. As with all other gearbox issues, quick intervention is essential. Without it, the components of your gearbox can start to deteriorate rapidly.

Limp mode

If your Range Rover Evoque suddenly detects abnormal behaviour from the gearbox, the vehicle may put itself into restricted or limp mode. As a proactive safety feature to ensure you don’t put yourself or your vehicle at risk, limp mode may activate when you assume everything is functioning correctly. As a result, you may find your vehicle initiates this setting when cruising steadily, constantly stopping or starting, or after a harsh gear shift.

You’ll feel a sudden loss in power, be stuck in just one gear, or have a reduced selection of gears available to you.

The good thing about limp mode is that the vehicle detects something is not right and therefore protects the gearbox from further damage. It would remain advisable to speak to your Range Rover garage, though, as they can investigate the causes.

Shuddering or juddering during acceleration

If you feel your steering wheel or seats vibrating, or the vehicle feels like it’s shaking as you accelerate, there could be issues with your gearbox. It normally happens during light acceleration or when you cruise in higher gears and may sound like a low-frequency vibration or a slight droning noise.

It’s often caused by contaminated transmission fluid or clutch wear and is occasionally mistaken for wheel imbalance rather than a transmission problem.

Grinding gears or difficulty selecting them

In manual models, you may occasionally find it hard to select a gear, or when you do, the gears grind. This could indicate varying levels of wear on a range of components. You’ll notice it most often when shifting in low gears or when you attempt to change gears too quickly. It also happens when your vehicle is too cold to operate at its optimum levels.

You’ll feel a resistance when trying to change gear, almost as if the gear is pushing back. Sometimes, you’ll be able to change gear smoothly; other times, it’ll be a struggle. This inconsistency can lead drivers to leave it until it is too late, so it is advisable that the moment you hear a grinding or crunching noise, or what resembles metallic scraping during a gear shift, you reach out to a mechanic.

What causes Range Rover Evoque gearbox failure?

Range Rover Evoque gearboxes can fail for several reasons, among the main contributors are:

  • Infrequent transmission fluid changes
  • Ignoring warning signs such as grinding gears, gears slipping or delayed gear engagement
  • Heavy stop-start driving
  • Towing without additional cooling consideration

Despite many claims of being “sealed for life”, gearbox fluid degrades over time, meaning that a regular service is essential to ensure your Evoque remains in its best condition.

Should I repair or replace my Evoque gearbox?

Each case is different; problems detected early can benefit from targeted repair. For early-stage faults, this is the ideal way to keep your Range Rover in good condition without spending excessive amounts.

Reconditioning is another option. This cost-effective alternative to replacing a gearbox keeps your Range Rover working as it should, without the high cost.

If a gearbox is left in poor condition for too long or it suffers severe mechanical failure, a replacement is often the only option. This can be expensive, so to avoid long delays and expense, you should ensure your Range Rover service schedule is kept up to date.

When should you get your Evoque gearbox checked?

Contact a Range Rover specialist like RCV the moment you notice:
