Why is Range Rover Insurance So Expensive?

Range Rover insurance in 2026 can be a substantial expense, with one owner famously quoted £38,000 in 2024. It’s an expense that takes many new owners by surprise and one that continues to shock those who already own a luxury SUV, but why is Range Rover insurance so expensive compared to other vehicles?

Range Rovers are expensive to insure primarily because of their high theft rates, costly repairs and premium vehicle values. Premiums can range from £266 to over £800 per year, though location, driver history, model and more can all push costs much higher.

In short, the below all help keep Range Rover insurance costs high.

  • High levels of theft
  • High repair costs
  • High vehicle value
  • Vulnerabilities within specific models

In this blog, we’ll look at these factors as well as what you can do to help reduce your premiums. It’s worth noting that we are NOT a Range Rover insurance provider; instead, we use our years of experience as Range Rover specialists to offer helpful advice that may help keep your costs down. How much to insure a Range Rover?

Figures for Range Rover insurance vary greatly by model and can start at around £500 per year, but also reach dizzying heights of more than £3,000.

As mentioned in our intro, one owner was once quoted £38,000! Of course, that is an extreme scenario, but when building quotes for owners, the insurers look at:

  • The model
  • The location
  • The driver’s age
  • The risk
  • Driving history
  • Excess amount
  • Repair costs

Each factor can add a substantial sum to the bill, with city centre locations or areas with high crime rates often among the leading contributors for a more expensive package.

According to Go.Compare, the Median price paid for Range Rover insurance up until late 2025 ranges from £266 to £823.

Range Rover Model Median Insurance Cost
Evoque £564
Sport £823
Discovery Sport £585
Discovery £525
Range Rover £742
Freelander 2 £350
Velar £798
Defender 110 £713
Defender 90 £441
Freelander £266

Your own quote may vary significantly based on the factors we cover below, but these medians provide a useful benchmark.

What insurance group is a Range Rover?

Insurance groups in the UK run from 1 to 50. Group 1 is the cheapest, with group 50 being the most expensive. Range Rover models sit at the higher end of the scale, which goes a long way to explaining why premiums are so high.

A large number of Range Rovers sit between group 40 and group 50, reflecting their high value, repair costs and theft risks. As an example, a Range Rover Sport is normally found in groups 47-50 whereas a Freelander is considerably lower.

What affects the cost of insuring a Range Rover?

We touched upon several key factors earlier that contribute towards high premiums. From location to model and from driver experience to repair costs, each plays a part in your insurance quote.

We’ll explore each in a little more detail below.

Theft

Range Rovers are among the most frequently stolen vehicles in the UK. What Car recently published their list of the most stolen cars in the UK 2025, and whilst only the Evoque made the top 20, Land Rover sits as the 5th most stolen brand in the UK, with 3690 vehicles snatched. With a high potential for theft, insurers are wary of a high number of claims, so they will up their prices to match the risk.

Vehicle and repair costs

Some Range Rover models could set you back in excess of £100,000 brand new, while some used editions could still cost £30,000 or more. With such high prices for both new and used vehicles, the insurer sees every potential total-loss claim as extremely expensive and makes sure the premium reflects this.

At the same time, many Range Rovers are fitted with sophisticated technology or premium materials. To repair or replace parts that could be damaged in an accident or purposefully stolen isn’t cheap.

Driver age and experience

An experienced driver will often benefit from lower insurance costs. Especially if they have no previous claims history. For a new or inexperienced driver, there is a clean slate when it comes to claims, but the level of risk is potentially much greater. Therefore, an insurer assesses the risk and makes a judgement based on the driver’s history. If they don’t have one, then it’s likely that the insurance costs will be high.

Location

Location plays a huge part in how expensive Range Rover insurance can be. A quiet suburban cul-de-sac with low crime and relatively empty roads will see a Range Rover owner facing a very different insurance quote from a driver living in a built-up area with heightened crime risk. Unfortunately, there is a targeted theft of Range Rovers nationwide. Opportunistic criminals steal Range Rovers, regardless of location, to export them overseas or strip them down in illegal warehouses from where they can then organise the sale of expensive parts on the black market.

Excess amount

If you are already baulking at the Range Rover insurance quotes you have been provided, it might be because the excess is too low. Insurance excess is the amount you are willing to pay towards the repair or replacement of the vehicle; the lower it is, the higher the onus on the insurer, and for that, they will charge you more.

How are Range Rovers being stolen?

Range Rovers do come equipped with a range of security features, but with many relying on specific technology, thieves have adapted to find ways around it. There are multiple ways your Range Rover may be breached; among the most common are:

Relay attacks

This is one of the most common methods to steal a Range Rover. Thieves will target Range Rovers with keyless entry and use a relay device to amplify the key fob’s signal.  With a second device near the car, the vehicle can be unlocked, started and driven away, all without an alarm sounding. Thankfully, enhanced features have been deployed in more recent models, reducing the chances of this method of theft being successful.

On-board diagnostic attack

When relay attacks don’t work, thieves may try a more aggressive form of theft. Forcing entry into the Range Rover, they can connect a device to the OBD and make it programme a blank key quickly. The thief can then drive away as if they had the keys all along.

Signal jamming

Signal jamming is another way thieves try to steal Range Rovers. By blocking the signal from the key, the owner is unable to lock the Range Rover despite being certain they have. The vehicle is then unlocked, and the criminal can jump in and attempt to drive away.

Key theft

Simply stealing your keys remains a possibility, and even if you have locked your vehicle, it remains vulnerable.  Many owners leave keys on windowsills or on hooks, and unfortunately, these are often in vulnerable positions. By using a hooked tool or trying to enter the home, a thief could find themselves getting hold of your keys and stealing your vehicle. Keep keys away from letterboxes, windows and doors to help reduce this risk.

How can you reduce the costs of insuring a Range Rover?

Insurance costs for your Range Rover could be reduced by implementing a combination of measures. Some may be more specific to your home, whilst others are purely vehicle-related. We’ll run through them below:

Add a ghost immobiliser and tracker

A ghost immobiliser can be a great way to help prevent your Range Rover from being stolen. Installed discreetly on the inside, thieves won’t see them, and if they do get into your vehicle, they can’t go anywhere. Activated by PIN, the vehicle will only move once the PIN is entered.

A tracker is another great idea. If it is insurance-approved, you could see your premiums come down. If your vehicle was stolen, the tracker will help locate it, potentially leading to its recovery. You may even find that your insurer requests a tracker as a condition of the policy. Look for a Thatcham-approved S7 or S5 tracker, as all major UK insurers recognise them.

Add a steering wheel lock & a wheel lock

In-car security, like a steering wheel lock, is a simple yet effective way to help prevent theft and potentially keep your insurance costs down. They work as a deterrent and as a prevention. Thieves who spot a steering wheel lock may decide it’s not worth trying to break into the vehicle, and if they do try it, they can’t go anywhere without a tremendous amount of effort to remove the lock.

You could also add a wheel lock to just one wheel of your Range Rover. This means that even if the thief gets in and removes the steering wheel lock, they are still unlikely to move anywhere.

Invest in signal blocking

Some thieves will try to use the signal from your keys to get into your vehicle, but you can stop or reduce the chances of this happening. At home, you could use a signal blocking box. You put your keys inside it when you aren’t using your vehicle, and thanks to the metal-lined material, thieves can’t benefit from the signal your key emits.

You can also do this when the keys are in your pocket or bag. Purchase a Faraday pouch, pop the keys in it, and the signal is blocked, limiting the chances of a thief getting access.

Use your garage or driveway to store the car

Many insurers want to know where you keep your vehicle. Parked on the roadside, it’s seen as riskier than if it were locked in the garage or kept on your drive. If you have a garage and decide not to use it, insurers may not be too favourable with the quote!

CCTV and doorbell cameras

Installing security cameras around the exterior of your home not only acts as a great deterrent but will also be useful for police evidence and insurance claims. An insurer is more likely to charge you less if you can actively show you are trying everything to deter theft rather than just leaving it to chance.

Take advantage of the JLR security update

If your Range Rover was built between 2018 and 2022, it qualifies for the free JLR security update. You can book this with your local Range Rover dealership, but check your VIN first to make sure your model is eligible.
